My 67, (YY yellow) has body color firewall paint, it is original yet I never see anything but black painted firewalls at the casual shows! In talking with those folks they insist black is the right color for 67 firewalls. Can anyone shed some light on this issue? hipirn

I have been working with a guy who is a concours judge on 67 through 69 and he says the enginge compartments were all done in satin black. Obvisously I have not seen your car but I would bet to say that the yellow is not original, maybe it was done a long time ago so it has that old look but I have never seen an original done with anything but satin black.
The inside of the front fenders were also shot the same color of the car before the fenders were installed. I just had the paint and body work done on my 67RS and did alot of research before having it done so it would be as original as possible. Hope this helps you out a little!

Black was the standard color for engine compartments.

Thanks posters..This firewall paint thing is interesting. This 67convertible I'm working on was bought new by my father inlaw, and accrued directly to me, and had never been apart until my ownership, and the firewall is (was)YELLOW extending down to the subframe to the grey of the floor pan. Unfortunatley the photo's of the original are gone, and I've repainted both the under floor and the firewall. Yes, yellow and grey again, though the grey color is off a shade toward the gray/green side! I'm not trying for a concours restoration but am keeping it as much original as I can but still presentable??... hipirn

Hi. Save your self some money and go to your local harware store and buy a 1qt. of Rust-oleum 7777 satin black and thin it down with terpenitine and you'll get the original look.
good luck.

So, you are saying it was/is yellow in the inside firewall and outside fire wall?

cplthomas: The dash side of the firewall at the bottom was floor color the upper part was pretty much bare and the outside (hood side) is yellow the same as the outside of the car! hipirn

Interesting. I can see the inside being the same color as the rest of the car, but the outside fire wall.... hmmm. I would say that the outside paint is from some over spray and the painter just got it too much on the firewall, the inside is from the paint process in general, I think they painted the car all one color then went back and painted the inside to dealer/buyer specs.

So are we talking about inside the engine bay? And is there a benefit to painting it black? I was going to do mine the same color as the car.

I haven't found anything in my research to indicate the engine bay was painted the same color as the car from the factory. I will do more looking around and see if I come up with anything.

cplthomas and those following this thread: Today I took the time to unlayer the paint in a couple of places on the firewall of this project 67 convt.. I found 3 layers, the yellow one I put on, the original yellow and a grey underlayer on the bare metal. There is NO black paint on this firewall, nor has there been! This car according to the plate on the firewall was built the 2nd week of Jan. 1967. Another strange, I have the protecto plate that my father in-law kept with the car and it states the car was delivered to him on 1-14-67 The car was (which had been ordered by my father in-law), built at the Norwood plant in Ohio where we live, transported, prepped and delivered the same week, how's that for getting a new car in a timely manner! hipirn

Thats pretty cool. BTW I highly recommend you hold on to the protect-o-plate. You just increased the value of your car with just those words.
