something shot into my head today while i was playing a game.. is it possible to make my 350 into a 396? IF SO, just what exactly would it take? it would probably be an outragous amount of money, but id like to know. I had fully planned on eventually makin it a 383, but havin a 396 just seems so much cooler. I mean, how many people have a 396 in their 3rd gen? might be only a few if any for a reason, but dangit, im gona find out!

come on tom, you should know better than that, 350 = small block, 396 = big block
and yes the 400 is a small block, but thats how chevy rolls

I know a guy that has an 83 camaro with a 454 in it.....
You wanna talk about a sleeper car..
You would never expect it even if he was next to you at a light.
Don't get me wrong it's sounds mean as hell, but you would never guess 454.
Until he blows your doors off or if he popped the hood, this thing is HUGE!!!!!!

actually... there are 396 small blocks, a company in california produces them. its a 350 bored .060 over with a 400 crank as I recall, but I am not positive on how it gets there. But they DO exist, its not a common thing. One was built in Chevy High Performance magazine like a year agor, they built a 355, 385, and the 396 small block. it cost around 5500 dollars and built like 480 hp at the crank

see ok, so im not TOTALLY WRONG then. just mostly. I figured it could be done somehow since theres a 400 SB, and anybody can tell you that 396 is less than 400.

Did you know that the 396 is actually a 402 ? And was known as a " rat motor " . You just want a 348 ! ;-) lol

chances are this will never happen, im just entertaining ideas for my car when i get around to being able to play with it a bit. With any luck, this time next year depending on what happens with school. Ive enrolled at an automotive class at the firist or second ranked school in Missouri, i think its in the top 5 nationwide. so not bad.
Ultimately ( or dream plan) would be at least a 383. Maybe a small shot of NOS, turbo or s/c ( still decideing which) tko-600 transmission, with a 12 bolt 3.42 rear end. Like i said, its just the ultimate plan, more like a dream of mine. By looking around at MOST people with cars like mine and dreams like mine. Ill end up leaving it alone till im 25 and selling it because i have a child or two and a wife, housepayments, and working all the time. i hope it wont come to that, but well see.

actually the 454 is a little diff block, cast slightly bigger, World Products makes it, and it costs 11 grand oil pan to carb, builds around 650 hp in the trim they send to you, has like 10:1 compression, forged internals, nice motor

Actualy if its a bigger casting its a big block. The production big blocks are wider that the small blocks. Its nothing special from WP.
World products small blocks biggest bore is 4.185". If you use a 3.875" stroke it will make 426.4ci

nah,its a small block, has a slightly taller deck height than standard, and is around a quarter inch longer to provide a little rigidity with the large bore, it is not a big block though, its def a small block, uses sbc heads, headers, etc. the bore is 4.250"x4.000" here is a link
http://www.worldcastings.com/prods_pages/add_info/101011_003_techspcs.htm btw, compression is 10.5:, not 11:1, my bad and as for the other bore you speak of, thats for the aluminum blocks, not the cast blocks

yeah, this one is a complete motor special edition, not just the block, dunno if you can get just the short block, didnt look

9/20/2007 6:11:46 PM
hell, i might as well ask.short block. long block, differences?? i know mine is a 350 long block. whatever that whole thing means
MadMikeZ28

Short block would be no heads, intake... Long block would be more complete. And if you look under short blocks you willl see it there also. You add the heads and a cam.

cool, its expensive though, might as well go LSx and have similar powr and way more efficiency/reliability
