i got a 97 ss, does anyone know if k&n makes an air filter for my car?  i went to the site and they didn't list one.  my second question has to do with a gear change.  my rear end is making noise that needs to be fixed so i'm going to change the gears while its being worked on.  most of you say 3:73 for an automatic which mine is.  i've talked to a couple of my mechanics and they're afraid that that gear is going to be pretty harsh and rough and i'm not going to like those gears on the interstate.  i do drive it about 2 hours away from my town and don't want to have to change that.  they said they think 3:42 would be a better choice.  any opinions? i have a 3:23 gear right now

of corse K&N makes Air filters for almost every car, o they wouldnt stay in buisness,

depends what do you want your car to do are you looking to race? o use it every day?

if your going to use it everyday and put long distance on it, leave it how it is, but if you want it just to race n for show, then do what im doing and just get a racing transmission put in

A 3.73 final gear is a universally great gear.  Depending on the variable of the transmission gearing, I think it will do well as far as getting out of the hole a little faster.  My Nova is running 3.73 final and I'm quite impressed by it's take off.  Keep in mind that the higher the gearing in the rear, the faster the acceleration. The lower the gearing, the higher the top end speed (in theory-- too high and you can suffer, too low and the same applies).  Heck, most 1967-69 Camaros were factory equipped with 3.73s.  A buddy of mine has an S-10 with a freshly rebuilt 327.  On the back of that is a 4.10 gear.  Let me tell you... It's hard to keep up with it from a stop.  I eventually pass him, but he sure takes the cake out of the hole!

Don't just go for the K&N filter, it's not worth the money.  On the other hand, if you want to spend a bit more you should go for a whole Cold Air intake kit, not just the filter, that will at least get you some HP for your money.  As far as the gearing, for a daily driver, especially a highway driver, 3.73s are going to be a bit much, it'll take your gas milage to **** on the interstate.  I agree with your mechanics 3.42 is a better choice.

He has an SS, you know... The cars with the hood scoops. How much more cold air could he get?

If you dont care about spending a few bucks more a week go with the 3.73 they are a great all around gear. Also if you plan on moding out the car go with the SLP induction kit or one like it not just the fillter. If your keeping it stock just use the KandN and yes they do make one. Great car man hope you injoy her.

the SS's hood scoop does a pretty good job, but since the runners that go from the scoop to the air filter run right over the heads it tends to heat the air a bit, I should have paid more attention, that's my bad, but he still may get a little power increase, but nothing amazing.
