Does the computer store mileage info?

The odometer on my car doesn't work. well, more specifically it's not lit up, I have no idea if it actually works or not.
I was told that the cars computer stores the mileage info, is that true? If so, how do you pull that info from the computer???
 
Also, any info / idea on why mine wouldn't be lit up , or how to fix it?
 
This is a new one on me and i'm totally clueless.
