You want the one for the computer? That would be in the intake manifold. It should have a yellow wire and if it has two a lack wire as well.
If you are looking for the temp sender for the gauge that is in the head with a green wire.

i have a sensor with a yellow and black wire right next to my coolant temp sensor, but according to my book thats the temp sending unit/sensor. Is the engine temp. sensor underneath the plenum? i tried to use a light to look underneath it but all i saw were fuel lines and injectors.

Look for the wire colors. The temp sensor for the computer is the one with the yellow and Black wire (better 350rs?) That one only send a signal to the computer. The one for the gauge would have a green wire. It is usualy in the head near the exuast manifold. Maybe its not on yours but for the gauge it should be a green wire.

My 88''s temp sensor(ECM) is on the drivers side of the water outlet top rad hose. The temp sender switch (Gauge) is on one of the corners of the cyl head. This one might be hidden by the a/c bracket or rear firewall. Wire colors are as Mike described.
