why are third and 4th gen camaros refered to as f-bodies?

That is the name GM gave the basic platform on which Camaros and Firebirds were built.

yes just the platform, such as
97-03 W-Body= Grand Prix, Monte Carlo (Bonneville?)
J-Body= Cavalier, Sunfire, Sunbird
