Brought a '69 a few months back. Gas cap was leaking fumes in the garage, replaced it with a new one (same type) and same problem. Should I try a different style gas cap then factory? Has anyone else had the same problem?

I had this problem with my 67 only when I parked on a hill and if I put too much gas in the tank to were the fuel was in the filler neck.

i would look more for a leak at the gasket or a crack in the line at the tank, even maybe a pin hole in the top of tank.  Also check fumes at diff fuel levels.   I've seen most fumes from lines and sending unit gaskets

id drop tank if it were me

Since you have changed the cap (and I assume it goes on tight) then I would check the tank and lines for a leak. Usually, that's the problem. Check your carb, it could be the problem , also.

Thanks for the feedback.

I haven't checked for leaks in the tank or line yet. I can here the hiss from the gas cap after I shut the car off and assumed it could only be coming from the lip of the neck or the cap itself. Happens with a full tank and when close to empty. I might try a different style cap first to see if it seals better before doing anything else.

You didn't answer if your cap is a vented one or not. If it is, "vented" will be stamped on the front of the cap. You HAVE to use a vented cap, otherwise pressure will build up in the tank, and the gas and fumes will find any way out it can (usually where you don't want it to).

The old cap was vented, but seal looks worn. I just looked and the new cap is not vented. Going to buy a vented cap tomorrow. Thanks for the help!

that's why I asked you about the vented cap in the first post. a lot of people always seem to go to extremes trying to rectify a problem, when most of times the right fix is the easiest and most often overlooked

good luck and I hope it works for you
