u looking for v6 or v8? either way, if treated right they will last a long time. several members here have cars with over 150k miles and still running strong.

Like anything else if cared for then they will last a long time and the engines , especially the v8, are especially durable in my opinion.

i have had no problems with my cars...
anywho, lets see... if your looking for a v6, in 95 only 6% of camaro's came with a 3.8 (200 hp) stay away from the
93-95 3.4 v6 ( 165 hp) please. they are leaking peices of crap... other then that, 96-02 v6 is the 3.8, the only screwed up year was the 98 3.8 v6 (for mods) computer is hard to program, angled throttle body, etc...
in 96-97 some v6's were RS models... (ground effects, and RS decals on fenders and trunk)
another RS...
now for the v8's
the LT1 (93-97) 275-285 hp, is a fun motor. less powerful then the LS1 (98-02) 305-325hp, but it sounds better/feels more of a muscle car then a sports car... i wouldnt own a LS1 because people have them act like they have a stick up their @$$ just because their a little faster, but they dont realize that the LS1 looks like a catfish. and a modded LT1 will hand a LS1 its @$$.
in 97 LT1 (ss) some came with a LT4 motor, 345-355 hp....... very rare car but worth picking up if you can find one (pop the hood and look at the intake, it will be RED instead of silver)
the SS 96-02, (LT1, LT4, LS1) comes with a spoiler, and a ram air hood.
98 ss...
96-97 ss...
a little piece of advice... anything that you replace on a v8 will cost twice as much as the v6... (breaks, muffler, water pump etc...)
LT1 and 3.4/3.8 v6 car...
LS1 and 3.8 v6 car...

Ovulator, I think that's the most helpful post I've ever seen you make. Grats!! haha
To the OP: As other's have said, if you treat your car right, it will treat you right. Are you looking into a V6 or a V8?

there just is no substitute for cubic inches, you can and most do mod thier v6 but it is still just a v6. needless to say i like the v 8 as for body style well the 98 and up im not a fan of mostly due to the look of the frontend (real similar to some jaguar and dodge models and probably others) the 93-97 are unique in thier look and thats why i chose a 95 z28 convertible. 98 and up probably has the better motor LS1 it makes a few more ponies is lighter and would seem to have more aftermarket HP goodies available. it comes down to your preferences as they are for the most part good reliable cars in all models kurt avoid high mile and modded cars if possible and be sure to run a history report and look for signs of wrecks and repairs

I agree with the rest. I've own and 3rd Gen V8 and a 4th Gen V6 both great cars and last longer. At the same time it is all about what you want to spend, how many horses under the hood, and how well the car has been cared for. Keep up posted when you decide and get one.

the maintenance and repair bills seem to start coming faster and bigger usually after the car has 100k + on it. everybody has a different story and opinion but id say most GM motors seem to fizzle out in the 150k-200k not that they die but get to a point that a rebuild is necessary to control the leaking oozing or have oil and emissions control problem that only a rebuild will solve. the chassis parts and the rest of the vehicle will usually start showing its age with a need to replace the common wear items. the interior will usually start showing the wear also and these parts are getting harder to find and usually are not cheap. in most cases its cheaper in the long run and money better invested in your toy to pay a few dollars more for the car with lower miles ( this can indicate weekend use only or a well kept toy) than to buy the low dollar piece o junk that needs 5k worth of parts to look and work good again kurt

Sorry to but in mid thread- but the camaro I plan to purchase has 158k on it, at what point when I take it to a dealer to get looked at should I consider getting a rebuild- or even bother purchasing it- like what type of signs/issues would make a rebuild inevitable? also how much is a rebuild if I dont have the nessicary knowlage to do it myself?

the 3.4 engien is not the best gm. it is knows to leak a lot. a 3.4 camaro usually goes for anywhere from 1500- 2500. not reall worth that much. and they dont take mods that well. even with all the bolt ons, it will only get to about 200 hp. which is the 3.8 camaro.

I've never had a 3.4 but I was told to stay away from them, and so I did. Im on my 2nd camaro right now and I love it. I got a 94 Z28 and it runs like a champ. I havent added anything on it yet but Im looking into that. As for the 97 V6, that was my first car. I had a 3800series and I gotta say it is a pretty reliable car. I only added flowmasters on it and I can't say it sounded like a V8 but it sounded descent. The car itself, I had for almost 3 years and it never really gave me any major problems, just minors. It was very reliable, I drove it almost 1700 Miles from south TX to Northern CA, without any problems. I was very satisfied with the car and was sad when I sold it but I wanted Z28 so thats what I have now. As for $3800, I would probably try to go just a little bit lower since it is a V6. Like someone else said, the good thing about V6, the parts will be a lot cheaper. Overall, I wouldn't be so scared looking into that car u saw, test drive and see how it feels, only u will know if thats the car u want or not once u turn that key.. good luck
