to start, some back ground on the cars. mine is an 86 tpi 305 with no muffler, new cap, rotor, plugs, wires, some free mods (intake), and a shift kit. the subaru was one of the newer wrx's, but not an sti. it had intake and exhaust and a boost controller. we lined up for $20 and started with a rolling start. i got him for most of the time with him catching up and beating me by 1 1/2 car lengths at the very end. however, when i had raced him earlier on the streets, i was able to beat hime because he had a full car. now if he was full when we raced for money, i would have won. now im trying to sell some stuff to get some go fast goodies.

Your car is no doubt almost 20 years older than the Scooby-Do you raced and you only lost by a car and a half? Can anyone say TIME FOR NITROUS?

With that 305 its really the only way to go becuase you know you are really looking for a good excuse to buy a 350.

With that in mind an extra 100hp can be had for the do-it yourselfer for under $700.00 plus it will work on the 350 you buy when you learn your lesson about how NOT to overindulge with nitrous.

No muffler is also not a good idea... The 305 TPI does not produce enough flow to merit no muffler. You may even be loosing all your low end power with only very slight gains that you prolly dont even see becuase your engine is incapable of winding up that high.

Loosing sucks... Get back out there and win damn it!

when i took the muffler off, it felt like i gained a good 20 hp. my car already had a larger after cat pipe, but a stock muffler. winds up faster, and i gained about 5 mph on a rough quarter mile. im not really interested in a 350, i plan on saving up for a 383 sometime in the future. still have a lot to do in my life before i can afford that though.

but considering his engine has about 50 more hp than me, a short six speed, awd, advanced suspension, and lightweight drivetrain-its kind of amazing my old car kept up that well

A 383 once was a 350.

Sound improvement is not an indication of performance gain clearly as I bet that Subaru was not making a third of the noise your car was.

No muffler is an inexpensive way to go, but I think you will find a good performance muffler will bring back that low end power. Just a thought.

Your car needs some backpressure to maintain it's low end torque. Get a Magnaflow straight through muffler. You might lose about 5 HP at 5000 RPM and you'll gain a LOT of low end torque back which will make you quicker off the line.
