Check and see if the lower radiator fan shroud housing or spoiler is loose and "flapping around in the breeze" when the car gets moving. I've seen this happen once before on another GM of the late 70s vintage.

took the whole shroud off, and checked everthing on the front of the car. its all tight. the noise is getting more frequent!! haven't had time to pull the ballancer yet, but that seems to be the only thing i could see making the noise. any other ideas? any help is greatly apreciated. if all else fails balancer will come off wed.

Is the fan itself loose? It's highly unlikely, but maybe a cracked fan blade?

check for steering linkage, my camaro made similar noise over the summer and it was the linkage. Good luck

I've seen a bad water pump make that noise. sometimes you have a pump bearing go bad and not leak from the weep hole. you have to take the belts loose in order to properly check the pump. this may sound strange, but, check your torque converter bolts see if they are loose. A cracked flexplate will also produce the same sound.
