Im having starter issues. I had to replace the starter about 4 months ago because it was dragging.
The new starter worked great... never made a peep. And out of nowhere when i was trying to start it the housing part over the bendix cracked into and was making a terrible grinding noise when trying to start it. I took it back and got a replacement and the new one will turn over about twice and then start grinding. It wont grind initially... it will go wahh wahh grrrr$#@!. The old starter didnt have any shims, i tried a .020" shim but it did the same thing so i took it back out. I have looked and looked at the flywheel. It has a little wear from where the starter has been grinding on it but overall the flywheel is in good shape, no cracks that i can see, no teeth missing or rounded. the only wear i can tell it has is if i run my fingers on the side of the flywheel where the bendix engages i can feel some slight buring. Im suprised that there isnt more damage because of all noise it made. Please help.
