So there's this mount just behind the transmission mount. Its attached to the side of the transmission, and it looks like it holds up a long betal bar that runs parrallel to my driveshaft toward the rear of the car.

Does anyone know what its called?

Torque arm bracket if your discription is correct.

That description is almost perfect if it was not for his having a cold. Its hard to pronounce an "M" with your nose stuffed up.

I would say your more like F#%*ked because that is holding your rear end in line with the  transmission and it will pivot on the control arms without it. So it could pull the drive shaft out if you try to move when the rear rotates then whats the point in worrying about a loss of traction if you can't move.

Thanks.

See about two months ago I had a sudden problem where if I went past about half throttle in first or second gear the stick shift would rise about 5 inches. So we replaced the transmission mount, but the stick still goes up about a quarter inch or so on the gas and it bounces around while I drive. I was going to replace the engine mounts, but then I found this little bugger, maybe it'll help.

Off to Oreilly's!

I would say that 1/4 inch is normal.  Your engine is not solid mounted to the car, so it will move a little when the engine load changes.  Since the shifter is attached to the transmission (I am assuming manual trans here), it will have to move when the engine does.  You don't need to worry about that small of a movement.

yeah, its a manual.

The thing is, before I had the problem I remember the stick being solid, not moving at all. Now its bouncing up and down on the smallest bumps. But if that's normal...

Well, that's what mine does.  Even my Mazda econo-box has some movement, and it has less than 30k miles on it.  Are you sure that yours was solid?  Maybe you just didn't notice the movement until your transmission mount broke, and now you are more aware of it moving.

My dad had two manual 3rd gens and the shifters did not move. You may have weak or broken motor mount(s). The torque arm should not cause that because your motor and trans will hold it in place.

Hm. That was my first guess.

But I don't think I'll ever figure out how on earth you're supposed to reach the engine mount nuts.

So I guess I should check my mounts too.  I have driven a lot of manual transmission cars, and except for the 89 Prelude I had with cables instead of linkage, all of them move a little.  If you have stock motor mounts, there has to be a little movement.  Maybe not a quarter of an inch, but there will be some.

Yes it would have some movemnet but nothing where its jerking the stick around and I don't think it would jump 1/4". His cars were also new. By the time the second registration would come up he would trade it in so they would only be two years old and low miles as he had a work truck he also took home.

Agreed.  The shifter shouldn't be jerking around.  I missed that the first time I read his post.  I can see it moving that much if he is in 1st gear and getting on and off the throttle quickly, but not in normal driving.  If the motor mounts were new then obviously there will be less movement, like your dad saw.

I may be wrong here, but aren't the nuts attached to the mount?  Do the nuts spin when you turn the bolt?  It's been years since I changed one, but I think I remember the nuts were spot welded to the mount.

According to both Haynes, the nut should be removable. Plus the new mounts don't come with either bolts or nuts.
