tranny Whine?

I have a 2000 camaro V6 and sometimes when i accelerate i hear a whine coming from my automatic transmission. It sounds like a supercharger whine but does any 1 know what that is ? And I have 130,000 miles on it when should i consider rebuilding it ?

are you sure its the transmission? does it do it in a particular gear or is come in about 45-55 mph? if it is speed related i.e. 45-55 mph it could be differential noise resonating up the driveline to the transmission tail shaft. does it whine when your on the throttle, off the throttle or just floating it(by floating i mean not letting off the gas or giving it gas just holding steady. if you have the two piece drive line it could just be a u-joint or carrier bearing. give me more info and i might be able to help.

I allways thought it was either the fuel pump or the water pump making that noise.

Alternators make that sound too when the bearings ware out. But other bearings could do it too.

ok, it does it when you accelerate but does its start whining faintly from start and get louder. if it is at acceleration could be ringgear and pinion. if it was a bearing in the transmission it would do it whether you were accelerating or not(all the time). if it is just when your accelerating i would have to say worn ring gear and pinion or thrust bearing.also, check your differential yoke nut to make sure it is tight, if not torque to spec. and drive it again.if it is tight it might very well be a thrust bearing behind the pinion gear.i hope it helps.hard to dignose without being there and experiencing it though maybe i have pointed you into a direction to look.

So is it something i should be worried about. It does it when i accelerate but it goes away after a while.

mine does that too in about fourth gear or so (anytime I'm on the highway, doesn't matter if it's in overdrive or not). I actually had my rear end re-lubed and put in a new gasket, thinking that would help. My car runs flawless and I have no idea why it does it, but it's done it since I bought it, 4,500 miles ago.

Most likely its a noisy bearing, if it starts getting real loud or worse(i.e. all the time) i would take it to a mechanic. driveline noises are hard to pinpoint without a EVA(electronic vibration analyzer) gm has what they call a tech ear its the same thing. they both consist of a handheld unit which you connect anywhere up to 6-8 sensors all over the driveline(on the differential,talshaft of trans, carrier bearing,etc.) it can pinpoint where the vibration is coming from. if i were going to take it somewhere it might be a chevy dealer that has this equipment, most independant shops dont have these tools and end up throwing parts at it until they find the problem.
