Is there some way you can look at the title of the car or registration to get the model info?  If you see IROC or Z28 mentioned anywhere, it's a V8.  If it doesn't specify these things, it's probably a V6.

If it's a V8, they probably would have made it very clear to you while they were trying to sell it - "...and it's got a V8!!!"  If it has a V6, they may not have tried to sell you on that (don't mean to offend the V6 people).  I'm just trying to think of ways you could tell without popping the hood or listening to it to figure it out.

Either way...didn't you look under the hood while you bought it?

In a 3rd gen the V6 is awkwardly small underneath the hood...I can probably stand between the radiator and engine in my 92...

You can get the VIN and go to carfax.com and run a standard report (which is free) and it will tell you what stock engine and model you have. The operative word here is STOCK. If you want to know for sure count the spark plug wires on one side of the block, 3 = V6, 4 = V8.

EDIT: found this, check the 8th digit of the VIN and match it to what is below

T = 191ci, V6 (LH0)[1990-1992]
E = 305ci, V8 (LO3)[TBI][1988-1992]
F = 305ci, V8 (LB9)[Tuned Port Injection]
8 = 350ci, V8 (L98)[Tuned Port Injection]

Im a male man, I know man, ****s pretty embarrassing not to know this. But hey, even a genius asks questions. Not that Im a genius obviously but I figured...how else am I going to learn w/out asking. But thanks for the all the info...I really appreciate it. Im trying to get as much info on my car. It's a '92 RS.25th Anniversary edition..and the guy went off talking about the engine. But I did'nt know half the **** he was saying. I just wanted it 'cuz I always wanted a Camaro since I was a kid. So now I'm trying to improve the car. So thanks for the help guys.

That's an awesome ride.  Congrats.  I'm in the same boat as you about notknowing much.  I'm learning little by little and people will tell you that I've asked my share of noob questions.  The cool thing about the internet and this forum (imo) is that I feel like I can ask whatever lame crap I want and not feel embarrassed because it's just a bunch of weird screen names talking back and forth to each other.  It's not like you're asking your classmates/friends/co-workers.  So ask away!

I also like this forum because it's mostly people who are only interested in kindly offering info or people who are kindly asking for it.  It has seemed to me, in the past, that a lot of car people in real life (especially along the teen years) are pretty condescending when asked questions like "where's the air box?," like most of them are only interested in proving they know a lot more than you do and try to make you feel bad for having the nerve to ask such an unworthy question.

I work in an I.T. department - computer people are really bad about the same kind of thing.  We get some crazy questions.  Sometimes we practically have to take people's index finger in our hand and press the ON button for them (I'm almost not joking).  But I try to remember how I've felt vulnerable when asking questions about stuff I wasn't a guru about and kindly help them out.  Not everyone's an expert at everything.

yea thats a sharp lookin RS there. i like it. Chances are its the 305 like bad mentioned. I, like you, didnt know much about cars in general when i bought mine. But from necessity and just plain curiosity, ive picked up a lot just from this sight. a lot of knowledgeable people here. You will quickly learn what you need to know and what you need to do to fix it here.

as far as finding out what engine it is for sure, your BEST BET is to check the VIN code like 89frank said. Or, if thats the stock hood on the car, pop the hood, and look at the hood itself. Near the latch on the left hand side it has a few stickers. If your lucky enough, you can still read them, on one of them it says what motor you will have in it. I think mine reads 5.0 TBI. BUT, thats not whats in there now, so if there is an engine swap of anykind, you may be SOL on knowing which engine it is exactly without some diggin.

Best way to learn is by asking questions, no matter how stupid they may seem. You're better off asking a stupid question than being clueless.

If you're in the same boat as me in the "it's been swapped" i think the only way is to locate the block casting number which I believe is behind the driver's side head. Then do some digging online (i found a great site that has all chevy SB and BB) and see what car/year it could have come from.

well, i just washed my car and thought i would let ya know exactly what that lil sticker will say.. It dosent say the type of injection, just the block size. 5.0. The little note is on the upper left of the sticker

Wow...you guys are good. I appreciate you guys taking the time to give me all that info. I gained some valuable knowledge with you guys' response. Thank you. Puck90a; That is very true what you wrote. Im starting to realize that now. This is a cool forum....oh, and just found out it is a V6.I checked the 8th digit of the Vin like 89frank suggested.
