what was the copo capable of?  Im not callin BS or anything, but since 69 the SAE hp rating systems have changed.  the old 400hp big blocks arent actually 400hp as we measure it anymore.  It makes sence since a 350hp car now will run 12.9, but an old 350/350 donts come close. (dont chime in if u have a new 350/350 crate, i already covered new motors)

I realize that we measure hp differently now, but many engines were vastly underrated just like some are today. A COPO Camaro could do about a 13.2 second 1/4 mile on its horribly crappy narrow stock tires, but with decent tires it can do 12 flat pretty easily.. maybe 11's.

they were only underrated in the 70s and up. the 60s was free hp reign thats why you had 327s that would kick ass. Then emissions hit and everything died and companies under rated their motors for insurance reasons.

that would be a hell of a burnout to toast 2 seconds.  Id give it 12s pretty easy on DR's but probably mid at best with a stock time of 13.2.    the ls1 showroom stock record is 12.8 tho

The 60's was also the era where the motors were put on a dyno with dyno headers and an externally powered water pump so they would make the maximum amount of power.  Now the motor has to be tested under the hood with all necessary periferals attached as well as a full exhaust system, so most modern cars would dyno much heigher back in the 60's.

this is true as i assume it was easier to take engines out and put em in at a simple whim and turn of a couple bolts..

they were under rated in the 60's up to 70-71 after that there was no reason to under rate them because they didnt make **** for power. 460 big blocks making under 200hp.
