I'm looking at picking up a camaro driveline for a transplant into my 66 Nova. I will be doing some enigne upgrades for power etc.... I'm getting kinda mixed signals, should I go LT1 or LS1? Whats better for building.

im certainly no expert, but it is my understanding that the ls-1 is extremely easy to mod when compared to the lt-1, and that the ls-1 will make more power in the end, i havent seen any documents to substantiate any claims, but thats what im told. although i owned an lt-1 camaro for about a year and they do have some clusterf--- issues under the hood. havnt seen the engine bay of a 66 nova tho so i dont know if that would be a major problem. Also, what do you plan on building the car for? is it gonna be a drag car or something like a weekend warrior at the the track and a sunny day driver?

The LS1 looks more complicated than the LT1 but the LS1 has more power and is more efficient.

All in all it really comes down to how much money you're willing to put into the motor.  The LS1 is going to make better numbers in general though due to the design of the heads.  The shape of the ports allows for large flow numbers for top end while keeping a good flow velocity at low rpm for good low end torque.  The LSX heads are also designed to allow much more lift than the LT1 heads.  When push comes to shove I'd say go for the LS1, the only thing that would be easier with the LT1 is mounting because it's based on the original SBC block whereas the LS1 isn't.

Thanks for the response's. Mounting won't be an issue. The car has a TCI Mustang II front clip, more than enough room for the LS1, more than enough room for a BBC.

Car will be for cruising/daily driver. Don't plan on making it into a all out 1/4 mile car.

The LS1 has more power in stock form but the LT1 has been known to put out 800hp modified (very modified) and any engine can have that power if you have the cash. Personally I would go with a carbed engine if I had your car. Why bother with the computer if you don't have to plus I prefer the look of a old school engine, with updated technology of course, in an old school car. Just goes better. Just my thoughts.

your are going to have to get a harness for both cars.  this will be a complete pain in the arse unless you get a motor/tranny combo that is already running, and just drop it in.

Not true at all. I helped a friend swap a LS1 into a 65 Malibu and it was pretty cake. Painless makes a wire harness for swapping LS series engines into older cars. Look at Street and Performaces web site for parts.

I have a '96 with an LT1 and I love it, but I think it's obvious that the LS1 is pretty much the best stock 350 ever. It's got a LITTLE more power than the LT1, plus it's got the aluminum block vs the LT1's heavy iron block. That Nova of yours is a small, light car so you should keep that great power to weight ratio up and get the aluminum LS1.
