I'm going to take a look at some LS1 engines at a salvage yard today, says they have a couple 02 engines. How can I tell if its a 02, 01, 00, 98 engine? I know that some 01 and up have a LS6 intakes, but how do you identify them?

I think all 2001 and post models had the LS6 intake but also got a milder cam shaft so power was about the same. Those also had EGR removed (the ones with the LS6 intake). If you knew what vehicle it came out of you could get a guess what year it was (i.e. if it came out of a GTO it could only be a 2004, if it came out of a Corvette it could be anywhere from 1997-2004, Camaro/Firebird 1998-2002, etc.). I searched for about an hour to see if I could find a decoder or something that told me how years were designated in the serial number but I couldn't find anything. Sorry.
