I'm a newbe here and need a little help decoding.
I have a chance to purchase a nice 67 RS, maybe a SS350
The owner claims its a SS350 and claims to have the #'s matching block in his garage.
I have yet to see this block to varify the numbers. I'm not sure how to at this time but I am reseaching.
the trim tag reads as follows.

12A         0242
67-12637   LOS 10889
765-Z            R-R
W 2LGR          3SL
5Y

I thought it would need the 4P code to be a SS350.

It is said to have the correct 12 bolt (3.73) and 4 speed tranny but I havent varified the #'s. It does have PS/PB and multi-leaf springs, tach, console and gages.
What other tell tale sign should I look for to varify if its a true SS

It appears its not a SS because of the "4P" not indicaded on the trim tag.
I still want to varify the "original block" but I have a question or two.

To verify the "numbers match" is it simply matching the engine suffix (MS,MK etc) and block date code with the date code on the body?
Or is there a more presice way of matching numbers?

I need to make a decision on this car tomorrow before its advertized locally.
Its a very clean RS with a 383 (installed) and the original block (TBD).
The interior is 9/10. ext is 7/10. He wants $20K.

any help on decoding the drive train is appricated.

Partial VINs were also stamped on most engines and transmissions from 1967 on. Not all engines and transmissions in 1967 were stamped with partial VINs. Details and examples are shown in the Drivetrain Decoding section. However, be aware that clever counterfeiters can "restamp" these components by machining off the original stamp and creating a new one.

In my opinion if it was a original 67 ss the asking price would be considerably more I do mean considerably more. Check the original engine stamping's Im betting they will point to a 327.It is possible to find a partial vin stamp on the pad passenger side front of engine be sure you check the vin # make sure it was a v8 originally

I will get the drivetrain #'s this afternoon.
The vin is #124377L125364.
I agree with you that chances are its a 327.
The seller is a retired state trooper who bought the car 10 years ago from a local muscle car dealer for quite a bit more the $20k. My bet it that dealer slapped on the SS badging and hood and called it a RS/SS.
BTW the 4 speed tranny is suposed to be #'s matching.

Can you answer three more questions please.
1)This car has multi-leaf springs. I read that 67's only came with a single leaf including the SS's. Is this true? If so this must be later year leaf spring.
2)I've read about a differance between standard and SS models in the firewall around the brake booster. What is the differance?
3)Where would the build sheet be located? Is it easy to get to?

1) all 67 rears were mono springs including 12 bolt SS and Z28 cars. 2) is refering to where the spedo comes through the firewall...The L30 M20 used a Saginaw 4 speed transmission. The Saginaw had the speedo cable on the driver's side, the cable ran thru the firewall very low, just above the dimmer switch, this is the same location as an automatic trans car.A Muncie trans equipped Camaro (SS M20) would have the spedo cable running thru the firewall just above the throttle lever and it attaches to the passenger side of the transmission.3)Los built cars sometimes have buildsheet under the gas tank's nor cars dont.this is a los car

thanks again MM.
could you help me with one more question pretaining to the potential original block.
I read that on 67's partial vin's were added to the block ie "2L123456" for SS and Z28 only and 327's did not get the partial vin. If this is the case how would I verify the matching number block other then the date code and engine suffix?
I'm anticipating this block to be 327.

it won't be a '67 350 engine unless it has a '67 VIN letter stamp at the end of the long VIN number string on the deck pad!

But how is a 327 matched to a car without the partial VIN on the pad?
