im new to the wold of chevys. i bought a 86 camaro z28 and fell in love. its only down fall is it has an electronic carborator that tends to give me trouble. whats a fairly cheap way to eliminate this system? please help

Just buy a holley or edelbrock carb to replace it, the wires don't need to be hooked up with the after market carb. Here is what I suggest:

if i get a new distributor will that eliminate the computer completely? and is it best to replace the intake as well

I have a 85 z and I dont have my computer in it anymore I never had the wiring redone and it still runs if I remember correctly The computer does not run the distributor like it does in the newer cars

The computer does control the distributer. It takes care of the advance. It would also need to have a signal from the TPS to work proper. Just a good rebuild and properly adjust and the Q-jet works great. All it has is a TPS to tell the computer of its position and a Mixture Control Solenoid that adjust the A/F at idle and part throttle.

dont try and convert over to old school youll only end up regreting it. just find the problem and fix it. a computer is much more advanced than a spring, dont you think?

True, it may control all of that but why would there be a vacum advance on it as well????? My car was originally a 305 tpi I have changed the motor to a 350 carb (and will be changing it again soon) but I never messed with any of the wiring to the distributor or for that fact anything (as long as you dont concider cutting the power to the fuel pump messing with the wires) now there is alot that is left loose but the distributor that was in the 350 was the original one that came in the 305 unless someone changed it before I got the car. I had to change it because the mechanical and vacum advances were froze solid. Wish I knew how that happened but the car is the same as far as wiring for right now
I will be going back and stripping the car down and I will rewire the entire car to free it up of all the wires soon but will be going back with fuel injection but dont know which one I want yet

The distributer with the vacuum andvance did not go to the 305 TPI.

You just have to get everything that goes with it. Computer, harness, etc.
If you have no smog type inspection then check out the holley or edelbrock injection units like on summitracing.com
Oh and one thing to look out for is if you have the center bolt valve covers then look at the center bolts on the intake. Do they go straight down or are they at the same angle as the rest. If you went after market injection you would have to make sure the manifold will bolt to the heads or you would have to modify the manifold some.
