If he wants anything considerable "better" than what is already in his car stock, he is going to have to spend a lot more than "120 for a head unit" and whatever for speakers... and considering he wants to only spend a hundred for a head unit, I'm also assuming he wants to cheap out on speakers too?

Car audio is like anything else. You get what you pay for. When modding a Camaro (or any other car) do you think one person can get his car to run 10 second 1/4 mile times by spending 1/10th the amount than the next guy? Nope.

I understand that, but I am just trying to "help a friend" get the best deal on some mediocre equipment. He's not trying to build a show winner. Just something more respectable

No, I totally understand.

But to get anything much more satisfactory than stock, he is going to have to buy a HU for at least 200, then 4 speakers all around and an amp to power them. Let him know if he decides to power the speakers off HU power not to expect much at all.

Or he could just create a great front stage like I did and ditch the rear speakers ( I hate rear fill, sounds way unnatural to me). He can do this by getting a component set up front and a good amp to power them. Either way, it is going to be around the same cost.

Just let him know these are his options and if he doesn't like it... well, oh well. Haha.

Let us know where he wants to go from here.

Tell him to take a look at www.criagslist.com and find a location that is near him.  Just type in a price range and see what you can get....any HU under 200 dollars is gunna be a turd and for some descent speakers to run with that HU. The HU is the most important to get name brands...Alpine clarion etc. The speakers not so much. I Have very nice JVC's in my door panel in my maro...My buddy went to wal-mart...bought some sony's and they sound pretty damn close to mine. So speakers should come second hand when on a tight budget.

The only issue regarding craigslist is the fact that we live so far out in the boonies that the closest city is Denver and that is like a four mile trip... Thanks for the heads up though
