When you apply, they''re going to make you do a polygraph (lie detector). It''s going to come up, however it won''t be held against you. Something that minor won''t affect you at all. You can''t be an officer until you''re 21 however, except for WV, I think they''re age limit is 18. Evaluate why you want to be an officer? Is it to help people? To feel that at the end of your life you made the world a better place? Normally to be a detective you will need to work patrol for a few years, and then when they have openings "downstairs" you put in for it and that''s basically how you get the job. Being a detective is not easy. Do you have good communication skills? You''ll need it in this job. Multi-tasking, working under pressure and thinking on your feet are a must. Good luck

Depends. I applied to the CHP. The questionaire asked about past drug use. I was honest about the pot I smoked (and some other things) in high school. The poly came up and they asked the same question, again I was honest. I was accepted and given an academy date. 9-11 happened and I went back in the Army but that is a different story all together. The point is that as long as you are honest with the background guys you cant go wrong.....then again I have a buddy here that just got out of the army - great guy and a really good cop, he applied for a county job and was told ''Thank you but no thank you'' because he has a beer every other night. So it depends on where you apply. I was accepted by the California Highway Patrol, pretty prestigeous, but my biddy was declined by some po-dunkt hick station. Go figure. Also, there are tons of jobs out there. A criminal justice degree will get you pretty far. Some departments dont even require them at times. If you want to become an investigator/detective I would recommend a larger city that has more cops. The atrition rate is faster and your chances of promotion are greater. Smaller cities will only have one, and he will be there for 20 years longer and you will never have a chance. So, check around, do your homework in the cities you are wondering about and see if you qualify due to your past and look at ALL your options.

i knew about the poygraph test.. i am would lie to them.. and yes i am a good multitasker. and i work best under pressure. i aslo really like to work on things that seem impossoble to solve.. things that make me think hard a take a long time to solve really really catch my attention.. thats why i want to be a detective/investigator the city where i live ispretty big. and it is not too far from sacramento so i could always move there.. (not that im proud of it but stockton ca is in the top 10 places for deaths )

I was thinking central valley, hence the 209. Why do you want to be a cop? (this they will ask, I know the correct answer)
