Anyone know much about them?  As far as price and what to look for.  I know people don''''t necessarily like VW''''s, I don''''t really either.  But I just saw them racing on Pass Time on the Speed Channel, and wow.  It''''d be cool to have an old little ass kicker to cruise around in if I don''''t want to drive the Camaro.  PLUS, they''''re probably pretty good on gas... right

In stock form these old cars are good on gas.  Is just a flat 4 anyways so you will be looking at are 26 city.  The compression is so low you car run garbage end low class regular unleaded and still get fair performance.  Its when you start messing with things like new cam, rockers, etc.. when you start to loose the MPG and gain HP.

i would stay away from super beetles, those started in the early 70''s. for 1 i dont care for how they look, 2 more parts and cheaper for the pre supers. do you live in the rust belt? the heater channels rust, floors, battery tray, and under the gas tank are areas to look at for rust. it really depends on where you live for price, here in WI, a clean driver goes for about 4K, but if your say in CA, you can pick them up for $1,500 all day. if your looking to buy one the hold onto for awhile, i would look for a oval window roll top. that would be  i think early 60''s and older...i forget my years now.

I agree with only 90 percent.  The rust areas and all that, yes.  Heater channerls are the most difficult to replace, at least for me.  It is very involved to repair them.  But, the supers haveing less parts I disagree with.  The only real differance in the two types of sedan are from the windshield forward.  Otherwise they are the same car.  Infact the super is an improved model over the standard beetle.  I also agree with the prefered models.  The older the more desirable (as with most cars).  If I had my choice I would get a split window.

front ends changed, went to struts. what i was getting at is that your going to find more parts for the non supers because everything is interchangable or maybe they do. supers dont have the classic looks

Way back when I got married my wife went out and bought a used 72 Beetle. As far as I am concerned this was the worst POS I ever drove. After a while my wife refused to drive it, so it became my daily driver for getting back and forth to work. Finally it got "T" boned by an out of control Ford station wagon and was glad to see it hauled off to the junk yard.
However, a few years earlier I got involved with a my friend Dave, in supercharging his beetle, which included  larger cylinders (you can actually swap out cylinders in these engines), and a hot cam. Back then, it was popular to install Judson superchargers (actually a small roots blower), and very nice kits were available to fit on the VW. The car really livened up, guessing it was good for about 150-175 HP. One evening four of us got into the beetle and headed to Manhattan for a good night out. Halfway into the midtown tunnel the little car went on fire, causing the tunnel to be closed down and backing up traffic for miles into Queens. We were escorted out of the tunnel by the NYPD, and the car was towed out never to be seen again. Apparently earlier in the day Dave did some "minor" work on the carburetor, and probably did not tighten the fuel line properly.

That would suck.  I have heard of beetles catching fire.

One of my best friends has a 64 beetle sitting in his driveway lol. He just got it out of a barn his grandpa had it in, and now we are going to try and get it running and driveable. The body is in really good shape, no rust, but it doesnt run (to our knowledge) and the battery is dead. Hes got boxes and boxes of parts seeing how his dad owned three, now we just gotta sort thru it. Ill get yall a pic here soon.
I will say this, after looking through the "Rebuilding your VW engine" books, them things are WEIRD.
