there is plenty you can do.  You can replace the sending unit.  Its expensive just for the part, you''llbe looking between 3-4 hundred just for the part.

My sending unit isn''t all that bright either...two weeks ago I put 3 gallons in (the gauge was at E) and when I started the car up, it said 1/2 tank. Yesterday I gave it 4 gallons (from E) and it said 1/4th of a tank...

its always going to flux, the only way to get an accurate reading is when the car is stopped on a flat surface, its liquid so it will move around a lot which gives it an inacurate reading

Ok dont ever let it get that low unless you like changing fuel pumps first of all, and our cars gas tank is rather "V" shaped, so at the bottom a little looks like alot, and vice versa at the top. It wouldnt fluctuate so much if there was enough gas in the tank that it sloshes around that much.

yea my 96 does it too... after a while you get used to it, and you learn how to judge how much gas is actually in your car even with the gauge going a lil crazy...
