Solution? uh no, more like "A way to deal with high gas prices". I think the solution to high gas prices is government regulation. They can simply set a price ceiling on gas. Almost all the oil companies are based in the United States. And since the goverment can do just about anything if it feels like it, they can just say alright the fact that oil is twice as much as it was 2 years ago is simply illegal. And I''m pretty sure the citizens of the US wont mind signing a petition or doing some **** to get that passed. And the lovely thing is that we dont get most of our oil from the Middle East. We get it from Canada. So its not like foreign policies stand in the way. We and Canada are on good terms, right? So if the US and Canadian goverment had the desire to lower gas prices, they could. Would they? Hell to the no. The more gas costs, the more of a FUEL TAX they will get. So simply, we''re ****ed.

ORIGINAL: Jr. Mechanic Its no secret that people hate high gas prices... But think of it this way: Alot of the people whining also stop at a chain coffee shop, such as Starbucks, everyday, like clock work. According to Starbucks, the average loyal customer visits 18 times a month, and spends an average of $4.50 per visit. So, take $4.50, times 18, and you get $81 dollars. Now, take yesterday''''''''s gas prices. The average person fills up once a week. Say you have a 20 gallon tank, and you fill 15 gallons @ 2.50 per gallon. Thats $37.50 to fill up, and 4 weeks in a month = $150 per month. Now, take today''''''''s gas prices. Use the same variables above, but with the price of gas at $4.00 per gallon. So to fill up, it takes $60 instead of $37.50. In one month, that would cost $240 per month. Thats a $90 increase per month over gas at $2.50. What did we say you would save by not drinking coffee? So, to review, if you stop and take 10 minutes at home before work, and make your own coffee, and it greatly closes the gap of high gas prices. To take it even a step further, cut back on the amount of fast food and other amenities, and you could actually be saving money, even with high gas prices, while being able to drive all you want. im curious as to where youre located. someone calling into a local sports talk radio station earlier this week, had the same idea, on the same subject.

You are right, it is more of a way to deal with it, but I felt like using the word "Solution." But, the government cannot "simply" set a maximum price on gas. That would be called a command economy, and we have free trade (Laissez-faire.) That would make us communists. Not to mention, why would the government limit the amount of money that they make?

ORIGINAL: brassknukl since when does the governement care about the people?????? Never. But the thing is they COULD. It wouldnt be too hard for the government to come up with a reason to set a price ceiling on oil/gas prices. Yes the oil companies wouldnt make as much money (awww, how sad) but almost every citizen of the United States would agree with it. Plus, it would be better for the economy, the less we spend on gas, the more we can spend on other stuff.
