I''''m sorta cluless when it comes to the rear end and gears.  I have a 79 camaro with a 383 stroker built th350 but the stock limited slip rear,  I get the one wheel wonder.  I need some of your guys help,  What rear end do i need and should get,  what ratios are best and about how much money are we talking to turn the stocker into a posi.  A list of the exact parts I need would be very helpful. All help is greatly appreciated,  thanks Zack
*EDIT*  I do not need anything crazy just a nice solid posi,  car is basically a cruiser not for racing.

For your information Positraction (Posi) is a limited slip.  What you discribe is a open rear and NOT a limited slip unless it is wore out.  Know the differences before asking questions.

You should have a 8.5 inch 10 bolt also known as the corperate 10 bolt it is a fairly strong rear (as stated by Randys ring and gear book "strength rivels that of the 12 bolt" )it is alot stronger than the third gen 10 bolts. You need to find out what you actually have take the cover off and look the posi units in these were a s spring conical posi if I remember right I dont think they are rebuildable. The eaton posi is a good unit that is rebuildable and"adjustable". Posi carriers go in series 1 through 4 according to gear ratio.

I opened the rear end this past Sunday and well it is not a posi,  no "S",  just the stocker, 10 bolt 8.5 28 spline?  So I guess now I just have to buy a posi unit to fit and choose what gears I want,  correct?  I am leaning towards 3:08 for a good balance.

You can put a posi unit in?
Can I do that to my rear end as well? I would rather not replace the whole thing if I could...
BTW, I hate my 3.08 gears, go shorter

I''m sure I can but not sure about you,  I really don''t know much about rear ends that is why I am on here hopefully to get some help.  I have a built engine and tranny and my car is basically a cruiser so I thought 3:08s would be a nice balance not to high not to low.
