A mechanic actually told me last month that I had a main seal leak from the transmission.

so..its low on fluid, check the trans. if some one says you have a leak, that means you need to keep an eye on it.

It''s a rear main seal leak to be exact. I checked the trans fluid and I''m guessing it''s low. Do I have to take it to the tranny shop to fill it up?

With the auto trans, check the dipstick with it running. Lets see where the fluid level is first.

You need to have the car running and with the brake pushed in run in thru the gears. Then you can check the level with the car in park. I will show you were the level needs to be on the dipstick. Do not just put a whole quart in, add and check a few times, and yes take it back to the trans shop and have them fix it right.......SFC

sounds like first gear is slipping bad and your hitting the rev limiter. Im not real familiar with our transmissions but it sounds like the first gear band is heavily worn. Take it back to the trans shop if still under warenty, and quit killing first gear, wait till second to hammer it.
