hi, i recently got a 1983 camaro which has some issues which i think are electrical. it started when the fusable link going to the starter blew. now every time i replace the fusable link and go to hook up the battery again, as soon as i touch the negative lead to the battery the fusable link blows and sends up smoke. does anyone know what might keep causing this? i have had the starter checked, as well as checked the wire as much as possible for shorts, and ive also checked the ground going from the negative battery lead to the frame.

The fuseable link is just that, A fuse. Depending on which link is blowing depends on what it may be. What does not work when that link is blown? Headlights, power when ignition on, etc?????

the headlights do come on, noting in the interior comes on (radio, dash lights, etc), and obviously the starter doesnt come on, so im guessing it goes to the ignition...so could this be a short in the ingnition?

Do you have two links on the starter? do you have the V6, V8 or L4? Could be an internal short in the alternater, blower relay or motor. But since you have no interior lights but the head lights work that may be another situation. The link for the headlight switch also sends power to the fuse box for the tail light, stop, and courtsy fuse (interiror lights, hatch release, cigar lighter, horn) on V6 and V8 models. The other link goes to the charging system and the circuit breaker on the fuse panel that is for defoger, power seats, windows, locks and the ignition switch. Search through the power wires on those systems and look for a break or insulation rubbed through. See if you can have the alt tested for a short of some kind.
