At the top end of the 1/4 mile I need to shift into 3rd or drive, but my "z" won't allow me to do so. So, I have to take my foot off the pedal before she will shift. This is causing me to give my competition an opportunity to pass me. My car is, for the most part, stock. Even with this disadvantage, I'm running mid 13's, with street tires. Any suggestions?

do you have a skip shift eliminator?

No, I don't have a skip shift eliminator. My Z is a 2000 with the stock Automatic trans.. ps.. it's an LS1 car.. if that helps.

well t hen you probably need the skip shift eliminator to get your gears back

I would like to help but I need to know what exactly are you trying to do. I gather you have an automatic. Are you shifting the transmissiom manually and the shift lever won't go in drive, or the lever is in drive and the transmission won't shift up? Have u done any mods or reprogrammed the computer, changing rev limiter or shift points ? What happens if u take off in drive and leave it there for the entire run?

Z28PETE.. good questions.. Yes, I'm manually shifting and when I put the shifter into drive, the trans won't up shift. I was told be someone at the track that I should quickly downshift to "1" and then into drive. I'm not really sure I want to do this.. for the obvious reasons. I havn't tried a run with the car in drive, so I don't know if that would work. And, yes I've hypertech'd the car. the Rev limiter is set to 6500 RPM's (not too high), and the shift firmness is at 100%. I'm thinking that I need to install a B&M shift kit, but I'm not sure if I have a 4l60e or a 4l80e trans..

Shifting down to 1 is not a good idea, the computer is supposed to pevent the transmission from shifting into first at the speed that you are traveling, bui it is not worth taking the chance. Try to set the shift points at least 300 RPM below the rev limiter setting. There is not much going on after 6000 rpm anyway and it will probably upshift better. Under certain conditions the computer will override whatever you are trying to do with thw shift lever. These cars are equipped with the 4L60E transmission which doesn't last too long when drag racing. The 4L80E would be a better choice, much stronger and has closer gear ratios, but it is bigger and more expensive.

The shift kit worked well for me till the tranny died; however I found it a little too harsh for street use.

z28Pete... Thank you for you reply. I thought that the downshifting to 1 was a really stupid thing to do. Maybe the guy that told me this was a Mustang fan :) or someone I just beat... Bottom line is that I ordered the shift kit. Fortunately my wife doesn't drive this car, I do.. then I'm turning it over to my son to carry on.. so, if it's a little harsh, well ... that's ok. I really appreciate your help. Thanks Again..
