Then they weren't racing you or they were in horrible mechanical condition. I've got experience with stock SHO's and what they can beat and a V6 Camaro is one of them, as well as the 1980 Camaro that was in question. ATX's are slower than MTX's, but not by too much.

I've moved up to Ferrari's, Z06's, and Vipers with one of my SHO's :-)

Well, assuming we are talking about the average Sho and the average Camaro 305 on the street, I'd go with the Camaro. The engine in the SHO was a marvel, but it is a high-ouput high RPM engine and it will wear and lose its edge over time - few owners take the necessary care. I would think a ten-year old one would be down on compression, have questionable valves, etc., etc. And the fuel injection on them was always a problem. By contrast the 305, while maybe not the greatest engine GM ever built, is just anvil-like in terms of duability. After ten years on the road I doubt it loses any edge, after 20, maybe a bit. So, out on the street I think it would be advantage to the Camaro.

That is one of the most asinine (not to mention bass-ackwards) posts I've ever read. The old 305 wouldn't hold a candle to the SHO motors durability. How's 303,000 miles (and still kicking) and absolutely no power or compression loss (actually more than stock power)?... and the car gets driven hard just about every time the car is used. I know there are more SHO's with more mileage too. In one of my SHO's, I have a motor of unknown mileage and it sat outside of a car, out-doors, for over a year and it still put down more than stock figures. The SHO motor also takes well to over 530hp on a completely stock block and LOTS of VERY HARD track usage (road course). The RPM does not degrade this motor one bit... It loves it! The real downfall to the car that causes problems is the Ford involvement with the car.



I know all about the great Chevy 305. My dad and I swapped his out of his Monte Carlo for a Ram Jet 350 about 5 years ago.

From my experience (several times over), an MTX SHO would win without a doubt. ATX SHO's would have a closer race.

Well, you certainly are a polite guy and very tolerant of opposing viewpoints, too, aren't you?

I'm sorry if I said your baby was ugly, but but I do and will continue to disagree with you, and I believe that on balance most people who can be objective would agree with me. I'm not going to get into any argument or justification of cite facts or whatever, because from your post I can tell that wouldn't matter.

However, I will say that your car looks good and you have obviously put a lot of money, time, talent and love into it.

I'm sorry for coming off like an ass, but I think it is funny that people think the 305 with sub 200hp would beat a SHO. I've raced the many cars in both my stock and modified SHO's, and I've raced MANY of different SHO's around the country, so I have a pretty good idea of what they can do. They are certainly not the fastest thing out there, but they are fun.

Thanks for the compliments on my SHO. Yes, I have put a lot of my money and work into it. I'm currently building a motor that will put out over 650hp.

All i want to say is that if you joined this forum, just to post things like this, you are wasting your time. BTW, they were racing and the vehicle was in excellent mechanical condition. He lost, sorry to burst your bubble

No, this is not the only reason I joined the forum. I just happen to find this thread and thought it was comical. You know for a fact the SHO was in good condition? Isn't the HO 305ci sub 200hp? My dad's 305ci barely had 150hp. My buddy sitting next to me had a 305ci and a SHO and we KNOW the SHO is faster.

The SHO motor is simply a more powerful motor and loses less through the FWD driveline. The SHO (V6 model) is faster than the 5.0 GT Mustangs (proven against several Mustangs). If you know anyone in this area with a 305 Camaro, I'll gladly prove which is faster on video. This would be with my stock SHO as my supercharged SHO is down so I can build a bigger, stronger motor.

Well, believe what you will. Among things I believe having SEEN engine vdyno ersus chassis dyno results is that the flywheel-to-wheels loses on a Camaro (11.4%) are less than those on FWD Fords (13.2%). I know some rear wheel drive units have more losses but the GM solid axle RWD cars (and the vette for that matter) are 2-3% more efficient than most people give them credit for.

Anyway, since you posted your dyno sheet, let me post that from my little Chevy V8, measured on the same type of dyno as your sheet: My car's nothing fancy - no aluminum block, no overhead cams, no four valve heads, just a little cast iron block with pushrods and only two valves per cylinder, and 701 ft lbs of torque and 698 horsepower at the rear wheels.
